President and Chief Executive Officer

John Clendening is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Blucora, Inc. Since his appointment in April 2016, John has led the organization by shaping and executing a strategic vision that continues to set new levels of top-line growth. With an intense focus on data insights and a drive to innovate and pioneer change, he delivers results.

 

John’s unique blend of professional experience over the past 30 years, at both entrepreneurial, venture-owned companies and the Fortune 500, informs his distinctive leadership style and approach to business.

 

Prior to joining Blucora, John co-led the retail division of Charles Schwab & Co. to record-setting profit growth over a three-year period. He served as Executive Vice President and Co-Head of the Investor Services Division where he repositioned the firm as a high-value wealth management company. During his 11-year tenure, he led in several roles, including Executive Vice President of Shared Strategic Services and Chief Executive Officer of Charles Schwab Bank.

 

John has also held leadership positions with Wells Fargo, The Coca-Cola Company, Frito-Lay, Inc., Sears, and Booz-Allen & Hamilton, a division of PwC. He also founded and was acting President of eMac Digital.

 

Married for 30 years with two adult children, the family enjoys special traditions and new adventures together. As an active member of the community, John supports the AHA of Dallas, Compassion International and the First United Methodist Church of Dallas.

 

John earned his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Northwestern University.

    Chief Financial Officer
    Mr. Athwal has more than 20 years of experience in global finance operations; including strategic planning and execution, business performance delivery, mergers and acquisitions, treasury, tax and risk management. He most recently served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of UGI International, responsible for financial strategy and execution across 17 countries for this $2 billion unit of UGI Corporation. He was previously UGI Corporation’s Chief Accounting Officer and Chief Risk Officer. Prior to his roles with UGI, he was the global mergers and acquisitions controller for Nortel Networks and before that worked in various corporate finance roles at IBM Corporation. He began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he performed audit and business advisory services for high-growth technology companies in Silicon Valley.
      Chief Legal Officer and Secretary
      Ms. Bruder, previously served as the Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary at Airlines Reporting Corporation, or ARC, which is a leading provider of data, products and services to the travel industry, from 2015 through 2017. She served as the President of Global Strategic Services, LLC, a boutique strategic advisory firm, from 2014 through 2015. Prior to that, she was employed by Commercial Metals Company (“CMC”), a publicly traded global company with sales and operations in more than 40 countries, from 2007 through 2013. At CMC, Ms. Bruder served as the Senior Vice President of Law, Government Affairs and Global Compliance, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary from 2009 through 2013 and the Deputy General Counsel from 2007 through 2009. Earlier in her career, she served in various legal roles at CARBO Ceramics Inc., American Airlines, Inc., Continental Airlines, Inc. and the law firm of Thompson Coburn LLP. Ms. Bruder has a Juris Doctorate degree from Washington University and Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Public Relations with a minor in Economics from the University of Wyoming.
        President of TaxAct

        Campbell brings more than 20 years of technology industry experience. Most recently as the Managing Vice President for Capital One’s Consumer Auto business division where he was responsible for setting business vision and strategy, while delivering exceptional experiences for consumers and dealers. Prior to Capital One, Campbell served in a variety of executive roles at Intuit, including leading Product, Innovation, Strategy and Analytics in the tax space. Prior to Intuit, Campbell held several positions of increasing responsibility at Amazon Web Services, Dell and HP. Under his leadership, Amazon Web Services launched over 200 new services, helping to make Amazon the top provider of cloud services worldwide.

          President of Tax-Smart Innovation

          Mike Hogan is responsible for driving the company’s cross-platform vision and strategy for innovation, including how to best capitalize on the significant tax-smart opportunities seen ahead. Most recently with GameStop, where he was Executive Vice President of Strategic Business and Brand Development, Hogan helped transform the company to a diversified retail business to include digital gaming, technology brands and licensed collectibles. His career also includes having held senior management roles at Dean Foods as the Chief Marketing Officer and Frito-Lay as Vice President of U.S. and then International Marketing.

            Interim CEO of HD Vest Financial Services

            Todd Mackay previously served as the Executive Vice President and General Manager of TaxAct since May 2018. Prior to that he served as the Company’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, responsible for Blucora's mergers and acquisitions, strategic investments, and corporate and business partnerships. Prior to joining Blucora in 2015, Mr. Mackay served as an advisor to the Company’s executive team focusing on strategy and M&A, and spearheaded the acquisition that brought HD Vest into the Blucora family. Previously, he was the co-founder of P2B Investor, a crowd funding business providing working capital loans to small and medium sized businesses; served as Executive Vice President in charge of Finance and Corporate Development for Emerge Digital Group, a privately held digital media company where he was responsible for revenue growth from $7.5 million to $50 million in less than two years; and was Executive Vice President of Global Corporate Development and Corporate Treasury for E*TRADE Financial where his leadership help increase revenues of the company from $300 million to more than $2.5 billion.

            As well, Mr. Mackay has held various executive positions with Telebanc Financial Corp, Robertson Stephens and Alex Brown focusing on financial institutions and financial technologies. Mr. Mackay received an A.B. from Princeton University in Economics with an emphasis in Mathematics.

              Chief Human Resources Officer

              Taylor brings more than 25 years of experience to Blucora, having spent much of his career transforming human resources departments within dynamic, high-growth business environments. He joined Blucora after nearly four years as the Chief Human Resources Officer with Mr.Cooper/Nationstar, six years as Chief People Officer at Travelocity, and three years as the Executive VP of Human Resources at Alliance Data. Taylor’s earlier experience also includes roles with Home Depot, Raytheon Telecommunications and Westinghouse. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from West Virginia University and has served as an active member of the Human Resources Policy Institute and Corporate Leadership Council.
