John E. Cunningham, IV has served as director of the company since July 1998 and as the chairman of the board of directors since January 2011. He also served as lead independent director from February 2010 through December 2010.
Mr. Cunningham has been active in the venture community since 1998, and currently serves as a general partner of Clear Fir Partners, L.P., a venture capital investment partnership. Prior to joining Clear Fir Partners, L.P., he served as chief executive officer of RealCom Office Communications Inc., a national telecom services company. Previously, he served as a board member of Citel Technologies, Inc., a telecommunications company, and also served as its non-executive chairman.
In addition to leading the Blucora board, Cunningham serves on the board of directors for Audience Science, Inc. and as an advisor to Petra Growth Fund III.
Cunningham holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara University and a master's degree in business administration from University of Virginia.
Mr. Clendening brings more than 25 years of experience in the financial services and consumer goods industries to Blucora. In addition to serving as President and Chief Executive Officer at Blucora, he also serves on the Board at Betterment.
Prior to joining the company, Mr. Clendening was Executive Vice President and Co-Head of the Investor Services Division at Charles Schwab & Co, where he was instrumental in repositioning the firm as a high-value wealth management company. During his 11 years at Charles Schwab, Mr. Clendening also held a number of roles of increasing responsibility, including Executive Vice President, Shared Strategic Services and Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President, Charles Schwab Bank.
Previously, Mr. Clendening also worked as Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Consumer Banking Group and Senior Vice President, Marketing and Strategy, Credit Card Division for First Union Corporation. In addition, he has served in leadership roles at eMac Digital LLC, Living.Com, The Coca-Cola Company, Frito-Lay, Inc. Division of PepsiCo, SEARS Specialty Merchandising Group and Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Inc.
Mr. Clendening received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Northwestern University, and a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard.
David H.S. Chung was elected to Blucora’s board of directors in May 2013. Mr. Chung brings more than 17 years of experience in private equity and public market investing to the company. From 2006 to 2012, he was a partner at Blum Capital Partners, L.P., a San Francisco-based investment firm focused on private equity and public strategic block investments. Prior to Blum Capital, Mr. Chung was a founder of Perspective Value Partners from 2005 to 2006, a partner at Standard Pacific Capital from 2002 to 2004, and a director/principal at KKR from 1995 to 2002. Previously, Mr. Chung was a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. and an investment banker at Hambrecht & Quist. He is currently a director of Payless Holdings, Inc. and an alternate director of Xtralis Holdings, Inc. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Hamlin School, and SLS School. He is a graduate of Harvard Business School and Harvard College.
Lance Dunn has more than 28 years of experience in the tax preparation industry, serving most recently as CEO of the TaxACT business prior to its acquisition by Blucora in January 2012. Dunn co-founded the TaxACT business in 1998. Before that, he was vice president of Software Development at Parsons Technology, Inc., where he played a significant role in the development and growth of Parsons' tax program, Personal Tax Edge. He previously served as an accountant for Ernst & Young and TLS, Inc. Dunn is an alumnus of Coe College and is a Certified Public Accountant. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Entrepreneurial Development Center, a community sponsored non-profit business accelerator in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Steven Hooper joined Blucora's board in April 2011. Hooper is a founding partner of Ignition Partners, a venture capital firm that invests in communications, internet, software, and technology companies.
Prior to founding Ignition, Mr. Hooper worked closely with Craig McCaw, a pioneer of the mobile-phone industry, for 18 years. Most recently, Hooper was the chairman and chief executive officer of Nextlink Communications (now XO Communications), where he was responsible for repositioning the company to an integrated communications provider of voice and data services. Before that, Hooper served as the co-chief executive officer at Teledesic along with McCaw. In that capacity, he oversaw the operation of the company and the negotiation of the multi-billion dollar satellite contract with Motorola.
From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Hooper served as the Chief Executive Officer at AT&T Wireless. As the President and CEO at the firm, he grew the company from $1.8 billion sales to $4 billion.
Hooper holds a Masters of Business Administration from The Wharton School and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Seattle University, where he served as a trustee for 14 years. He also serves as a director on the boards of a number of privately-held companies in which Ignition has invested.
Elizabeth Huebner was appointed to the company's board of directors in May 2009. Most recently, Ms. Huebner served as chief financial officer and senior vice president at Getty Images, Inc., a distributor of digital images and content. Prior to working at Getty for six years, she was the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Primus Knowledge Solutions, Inc., where she successfully helped the company through its initial public offering. Ms. Huebner also served as vice president and chief financial officer of Fluke Corporation, vice president and chief financial officer for the Western Region of McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc., and as an audit manager with Arthur Andersen.
Ms. Huebner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Utah.
Andrew Snyder, CEO of Cambridge Information Group (CIG), a family-owned management and investment firm, was appointed to Blucora's board of directors in August 2011.
Mr. Snyder joined CIG in 2003 and is responsible for oversight of its operating companies and investments. Under his leadership, CIG has grown significantly and completed more than 30 acquisitions over the past eight years, including the $200+ million acquisition of ProQuest Information and Learning. Prior to joining CIG, Mr. Snyder spent seven years at the Goldman Sachs Group, where he most recently focused on traditional media, technology and services investing for the firm's private equity fund.
Mr. Snyder graduated cum laude from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a juris doctor degree from Georgetown University. He serves on the board of the Association of American Publishers and is a member of the Bar of the State of New York.
Christopher Walters was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014. Mr. Walters is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Encompass Digital Media, Inc., which he joined in January 2015. As Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Walters oversees Encompass’s day-to-day operations on a worldwide basis. Mr. Walters joined Encompass from The Weather Company, where he served as the Chief Operating Officer from March 2012 to January 2015. Prior to The Weather Company, he served in a variety of leadership roles at Bloomberg L.P. between 2008 and 2012, most recently as the Chief Operating Officer of the Bloomberg Industry Verticals Group, responsible for operations, strategy, business development, and expansion of the premium web-based subscription businesses. Previously, Mr. Walters was a partner at McKinsey & Co., advising media, entertainment, and investment companies.
Mary Zappone joined the Board in March 2015. Ms. Zappone has extensive experience as an executive, including her current tenure as President and Chief Executive Officer of Service Champ. Prior to joining Service Champ, she served as President and CEO of Recovercare, a leading supplier of healthcare equipment, from May 2011 to February 2015. Ms. Zappone worked at Alcoa, Inc. from 2006 to 2011, serving in a variety of roles, most recently as President of the Alcoa Oil & Gas Group, where she was responsible for operations, strategy, business development, and expansion of the aluminum alloy product systems business. During her career, she has also held other senior-level positions at Tyco International, General Electric, and Exxon, and worked at McKinsey & Co., where she advised companies in improving operating performance, capital investment, and merger and acquisition strategies. She earned her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, and her MBA in Finance at Columbia Business School.
